Mabel Evans Dodge Sterne Luhan (pronounced LOO-hahn), née Ganson was a wealthy American patron of the arts. She is particularly associated with the Taos art colony. Mabel Dodge Lujan was born in Buffalo, New York. She attended boarding schools in Buffalo and New York City. When she was twenty she married Karl Evans who died in a hunting accident just two years after their marriage. She married again at age 25 to Boston architect, Edwin Dodge. During her marriage to Dodge she entertained regularly at their home in Florence, Italy and later in New York City. Her guest list included Gertrude Stein, Alice Toklas, musician Arthur Rubinstein, and other notable actors, artists and authors of the day. The marriage to Dodge ended in divorce, and in 1916, she married Maurice Sterne. The couple moved to New Mexico where she continued to socialize and hold salons at their home in Taos. She had an affair with Tony Luhan, which brought about the end of her third marriage. In 1923 she married Luhan.
