The Peter Miller Story: A Forgotten Woman of American Modernism

November 11, 2023 - May 15, 2024
Morton Contemporary Gallery
115 S. 13th Street, Philadelphia, PA

Morton Contemporary Gallery, located in the heart of Center City Philadelphia, in partnership with Gratz Gallery & Conservation Studio of Doylestown, is excited to announce an exhibition of an extraordinary 20th Century Modernist talent previously lost in the annals of history, but now found.

Born Henrietta Myers in 1913, the artist known as Peter Miller, graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) in 1934. To ensure fair evaluation and reception of her artwork, Miller decided to adopt a male pseudonym, believing that her work would be more positively received when attributed to a male creator.

It is with tremendous honor that we deliver her story of passion, grace, mysticism, philanthropy and artistic genius to you here in Philadelphia, the city where Peter's journey first started.

Peter Miller, Forgotten Woman of American Modernism Exhibition

April 23 - July 31, 2022
Gratz Gallery's home estate at 5230 Silo Hill Rd, Doylestown, PA 18902

Gratz Gallery & Conservation Studio Inc. is excited to announce our 40th Anniversary celebration and upcoming exhibition of the estate of Peter Miller, a female American modernist.

Over the years, Gratz Gallery has promoted and featured many important female, American artists from the New Hope Circle, The Philadelphia Ten, and students from The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.  It has always been our belief that female artists more often do not receive the deserved recognition for their work and talent. It is with hope and confidence that we are finally seeing women artists from history and current times being reevaluated and honored for their contributions to the American art community, as this has been long overdue.

The discovery of the Peter Miller collection presented here, and her story, is one the most fascinating and important discoveries we have made over our 40 years representing American painters. It is our great pleasure and honor to present the estate of the artist Peter Miller.
