Cape May is an 18 x 24 inch oil on canvas by Bucks County painter, Henry Snell. Snell was an important and beloved member of the New Hope Circle of artists. Snell settled in New Hope in the late 1800s. He was drawn to the area by his friend, William Lathrop, who he had met while the two worked together at an etching company in New York City. Although Henry Snell was British he was a strong supporter and advocate of American art. He was an influential teacher to many of the artists who formed the Philadelphia Ten. Snell was a strong supporter of the woman artist at a time when many of his colleagues were not.
