Well known in the mid 19th century for landscape, genre and portrait painting, William Winner was born in Philadelphia and remained there for most of his career except for a brief time in Charleston, South Carolina in 1848.

Exhibition venues included the Pennsylvania Academy, Boston Athenaeum and the National Academy of Design of which he was an honorary member.
