Susan Gertrude Schell was born in Titusville, Pennsylvania in 1891. She grew up in the Germantown section of Philadelphia near fellow Philadelphia Ten painter, Nancy Maybin Ferguson. Schell was a graduate of the West Chester State Teachers College and went on to study at the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Art and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1917 to 1920). She was a member of the Philadelphia Ten from 1934 to 1945, received many awards during her career and was a beloved teacher for thirty years at the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Art. In 1972, two years after her death, the Woodmere Art Gallery -- who had given her a retrospective exhibition in 1962 - hung a memorial exhibition of her work.
