Carl Lawless was born and raised outside of Reading, Pennsylvania. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Chicago Academy of Fine Art. His exhibition records begin at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1922 and the National Academy of Design in 1923 and 1927. Eventually Lawless moved north to settle and participate in the Mystic, Connecticut art colony, where he lived out the remainder of his short life.
